Natural U1 - The Respiratory System

All our cells need oxygen for energy and produce carbon dioxide that we must expel.

The Respiratory System help us to get the oxygen from the air and expel the carbon dioxide that our body produces. That is called respiration.

Respiration has two phases: (RESPIRATION = INHALE + EXHALE).

1. INHALE or BREATHE IN (Our body gets oxygen).

2. EXHALE or BREATHE OUT (Our body expels carbon dioxide).

1. The BREATHE IN process starts in the nose and mouth. They are some hairs to filter the air.

- The Pharynx transports food and air.

- The next tube is the Larynx and it is where we have the vocal cords.

- Then we have the Traquea and two bronchi that go into the lungs (air sacs).

- Inside the lungs, oxygen goes through the bronchioles to finally reach the alveoli where the gas exchange happens.

- In the Alveoli, oxygen is sent to the rest of the body.

2. BREATHE OUT process. At the same time, the alveoli receive the carbon dioxide that our body doesn't want and we must expel.

. The Diaphragm is a muscle that pushes the lungs to exhale (expel carbon dioxide).
